Artist Statement

Through my work I explore my thoughts and feelings on womanhood, and all the ways being a
woman can impact one’s progression through life. My work often discusses women’s place in the
world, and where we fit as we develop. I try to incorporate my own experiences as a woman, as well
as the experiences of the women closest to me. Some themes that can be seen in my work are
ideas of femininity, motherhood, sisterhood, loss, fear of death, and religious ideas.

I use a variety of mediums to convey these ideas, as I enjoy exploring different kinds of art making
practices and seeing how such themes can be portrayed through each type. Mediums I use include
collage, aqueous painting, ceramics, textiles, and printmaking. I often mix these different mediums
in my art, trying to incorporate meaningful combinations. Examples of this in my work include
mixing human hair and ceramics in Mother Cup, screen printing, textiles, human hair, and jewelry
in Kiki, and collage including paper, textiles, and dried flowers in From One Artist to Another. In
these pieces I combine personal and sentimental objects often associated with femininity with
standard mediums, using things such as mine and my mother’s hair, my grandmother’s funeral
flowers, and my jewelry. I think this allows for a deeper connection not only to me and my work, but
also for the viewer to relate to.
